Having served as an engineer aboard both the USS Enterprise-D and -E, Lieutenant Barclay also spent several years as a key member of the Pathfinder Project, set up to make contact with the lost USS Voyager in the Delta Quadrant and if possible, aid in finding a shortcut home. Barclay is currently acting chief engineer aboard the Enterprise, whilst Commander LaForge is on shore leave.
