Welcome! Common Terms will attempt to list and define frequently used terms and abbreviations on STOwiki that might not be familiar for those new to mmorpgs or wikis.

Camping
Waiting near a respawn site in order to kill NPC's once they spawn.
Critter
An NPC/creature that is at a low level, and is not aggressive.

Devs
Abbreviation for 'Developers' - In this case, Perpetual Entertainment.
Disambiguation
The process of resolving the conflict that occurs when articles about two or more different topics have the same natural title.

Griefers
Intentionally rude players.
Grinding
To repetitively kill mobs in an area.

I

Instance
A part of the virtual world that generates a new copy (an instance) for each new player or group of players that enters certain areas. This allows for less crowding and less lag in popular areas.

MediaWiki
The software behind many wikis such as STOwiki itself and Wikipedia.
MMOG
Abbreviation for Massive Multiplayer Online Game.
MMORPG
Abbreviation for Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.
MOB
Moveable Object.
Mob
An NPC enemy.

NDA
A non-disclosure agreement, or contract preventing information being leaked by testers to the public.
NPC
Non-player character.

Noob
A relatively new player who is unfamiliar with basic game elements. Sometimes spelled n00b and is often used as a derogitory term.

P2P
An abbreviation of 'Pay-to-Play' or 'Peer-to-Peer' depending on context.
PE
Perpetual Entertainment.
PC
Player character.

Player versus Environment.
PvP
Player versus Player.
Powergamer
A person who will spend extreme lengths of time online in one period in order to gain a higher rank.

Redirect
A page title which, when requested, sends the reader to another page which talks about the same subject but under a different title.

Sandbox
A public page that any user can edit however they want. It's purpose is to help new users become familiar with Wiki Markup.
SCMM
An abbreviation for STOwiki Content Manager and Moderator.
Spawn (point)
An point or area where NPC's will reappear after they have been killed.
STO
Abbreviation for Star Trek: Online.
Stubs
Articles which does not cover enough information yet to be considered as a completed article.

Talk page
A discussion page that is attached to every article. It can be accessed using the "discussion" tab

Temporary Commission/Temporary Ship

Vandalism
Deliberate defacement of STOwiki pages. This can be by deleting text or writing nonsense, bad language etcetera. Vandalism can be reported at Help:Report Vandalism.

W

Wiki markup
Code like HTML, but simplified and more convenient, for example '''bold''' instead of <b>bold</b>. It is the source code stored in the database and shown in the edit box.
