1. Introduction 2. Key Features 3. Latest Revelations
Welcome to our introduction to Star Trek Online, the massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) set in the Star Trek universe! If you are new to the game and want to quickly find out the basics of what it's all about then you've come to the right place!

Star Trek Online is still in development with many of the details of the game yet to be released. As new information is released wiki editors will update this to reflect the new information. Once you've read the introduction we encourage you to read the Enhanced FAQ which takes the official FAQ and goes into greater detail about the game based on the latest information.

Game Announcement

On September 7th, 2004 Perpetual Entertainment officially announced the game with this Press Release. Star Trek Online is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. Like most other MMORPGs, Star Trek Online will have a monthly fee. The game's pricing and subscription fees have yet to be announced.

Who is making the game

Star Trek Online is being both developed and produced by Perpetual Entertainment. Perpetual Entertainment is a new company dedicated to creating massively multiplayer games.

Star Trek Online and Gods & Heroes will be the company's first games.

It is worth noting that the publisher of the game is unknown at this point. In March 2006, Perpetual Entertainment announced Sony Platform Publishing as co-publisher for Gods and Heroes. With this announcement, we also expect STO to have it's own publisher before it's release.

What is the current status of the game

Typical MMORPG development is divided into five stages: pre-production, production, alpha, beta, and live. Star Trek Online is currently in the production stage in which key parts of the design and technology have been decided but the main features of the game have yet to be coded. The name "Star Trek Online" is actually a working title, it may or may not be the game's final name. During this phase Perpetual is working on hiring all the people who will be working to create the game, and the current designers are defining all the main elements of gameplay. Artists are creating concept art as they work with the designers to define how the game will be presented visually. The game exists, for the most part, on paper only.

Some key dates...

  • Official Community Website Launch: Late 2007
  • Beta: Late 2007
  • Release: 2008 (Tentative)

Beta is something many people are asking about and as yet there has been no definitive information released. So questions such as how long it will be and whether it will be open or closed remain unanswered, and will so until they are much further along in the game's production.

Currently Perpetual Entertainment has a development website online for the game. This site has some basic information and links as well as developer blogs. Perpetual has indicated that a larger, fully realized website with more information, dedicated forums, and a new design are in the works and will be launched sometime in 2006.
